The communities of Erakor, alongside partners, are hosting an awareness event this week on October 24th–25th to run a petition to preserve Erakor Lagoon. This two-day event will feature a series of educational activities and showcase the creative talents and craftsmanship of the Beautification Department, one of the many departments of the Erakor Bridge Youth Association (EBYA).

One of the coordinators of EBYA, Willy Sylverio, said it will be a genuine opportunity for the people to raise their voices on behalf of the lagoon. “We would normally organise clean-up campaigns with youths from the area to pick up rubbish from Erakor Bridge to Korman,” he said. “We prioritise the involvement of young children so they can learn from an early age and be mindful of the importance of keeping our environment clean. The upcoming event will be a great way to let people know about our work, our struggles, and our hopes to see our lagoon fully restored and clean again.”

Implemented by the Erakor Chiefs, the EBYA, and other communities within Erakor, the event on Thursday will start with a parade or demonstration of the Boat and Walk, beginning from Erakor to Le Lagon and finally to Seafront, where the rest of the show will continue.

There will be a conference during the day with authorities and experts who will lead discussions on the importance of preserving our environment, specifically on how to save Erakor Lagoon. “For so long, the people have been trying to raise awareness about the amount of waste that continues to pollute the lagoon,” Sylverio said. “The chemicals and waste prevent the locals from swimming, fishing, and enjoying the lagoon. One of the main purposes of our association is to speak on behalf of the creatures living in the lagoon, to protect them, and to save their home.”

An exhibition is promised to be held on Thursday and Friday, which falls under the Erakor Lagoon Restoration Plan, where communities will work together to restore the lagoon. Other activities include a drama—Bibingo II, written by the late Chief Timothy Natongtong—local bands and artists performing, and many youths displaying their artistic crafts by transforming trash into art.
