Erakor Bridge Community Environment and Wellbeing Committee inaugurates a solid waste separation bin

The Erakor Bridge Community is aware of the impacts of plastic pollution in the Ocean, namely at the Erakor Lagoons.

Since the forceful participation of the Erakor Bridge community in the 2017 World Environment Day, to denounce the impact of plastics in the Erakor Lagoons, there was important assertive interactions between the Community and the Department of Environmental Protection and Conservation to demonstrate that it is not all about beauty in Paradise. There is a ugly and dirty side in the Vanuatu’s development process: Plastics is killing the Paradise in land, in the Oceans and very visible at namely Erakor Lagoons .

DEPC understood Erakor Community perspective and both parts decided to partnership to build a garbage bin at the community.

The Erakor Bridge Environment and Wellbeing Committee was able to get together important institutional and grassroots with major roles in promoting awareness and supporting the ban of single use plastics in Vanuatu:

1. The Department of Environment Protection and Conservation
2. No plastic bag, plis
3. Ifira community

WE ALL COMEMORATED 24 DAYS OF THE OFFICIAL BAN OF PLASTIC BAGS. 

PLASTIC BOTTLES WERE NOT BANNED AS INITIALLY.  PROMISSED BY THE PRIME-MINISTER OF VANUATU. A MISSED OPPORTUNITY FOR VANUATU

Additionally two partners of Erakor Bridge Community were invited to participate

• Vanuatu Institute of Technology – which the Erakor Bridge Community proposed the construction of an appropriate technology in 2017. A machine to build take away boxes to assist the food and baverage local industry after the government ban of Styrofoam boxes made of fossil fuels.
• Ministry of Education

• Takabe community leader, a long time friend of Erakor Bridge community in the efforts to Save the Erakor Lagoons and Takabe river
