The Vanuatu Cycling Federation (VCF) will be hosting a workshop end of this week for beginners and a Bike Mechanic Training (BMT) for interested parties at the Alliance Francaise compound in Port Vila.

Kids’ interest in the BMT will meet a VT1500 fee and a VT500 fee for mechanical cycling maintenance and recycling. From 8am to 9am, Cycling Coach and Bike Mechanic Alex Pheu will be guiding participants through lessons on how to ride a bike while at the same time the importance of fighting against non-communicable diseases.

After the hour-long education, interested participants can take the next hour or more to see firsthand, the skill of undoing and repairing a damaged bike.

“This workshop is a means of educating children and adults alike on the importance of physical fitness, mental health awareness, and traffic safety rules,” Pheu said.

The workshop is a gender-based initiative so Pheu who also has a Coach Level 1 at the Union Cyclist Internationale (UCI) or International Cycling Union, expressed the need to blend in both sexes at the event from ages 7 to 12.

VCF has been a long-time body but due to a shortage of trained personnel, executives, and members, the body has been dormant for the last couple of years according to Coach Pheu, it is now in the reawakening stage and has seen a possibility of a bright future this year.

“We hope to train more young people to compete for Vanuatu internationally at Oceania BMX Championships. The Brisbane BMX Championships is coming up soon and we hope to have a team representing us over there,” he said.

Pheu said that VCF has 25 quality bikes that come with great durability but the need for cyclists is high to boost up the aerobic form of exercise sport that is very crucial since it helps to protect you from serious diseases such as stroke, heart attack, some cancers, depression, diabetes, obesity and arthritis.

He is asking that all interested youngsters attend the workshop to get educated on the sport and help develop the Cycling Federation.

Pheu also offers mountain biking lessons.
