A cooperation between the Council of Chiefs of Erakor, as part of the Erakor Lagoons Restoration Plan, Vanuatu Climate Action Network and the Ekoftau Wellbeing and Environment Association have started the free online course Municipal Solid Waste Management in Developing Countries from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland.

The organization Climates, a non-profit organisation that is building a network of volunteers, supporters, communities and businesses across Australia and Pacific Island countries in response to climate change, awarded a micro-grant of AUD$1.000 that will support the cost of the providing certificates to all students that complete the course and the logistics costs of the Ekoftau children exchange program with Nugna Communities working and environmental and conservation activities.

There are 10 modules in this course.

Have you come across large piles of garbage in neighbourhoods and streets and smelly waste disposal sites polluting the environment of low- and middle-income countries? Do you want to know what kind of sustainable solutions are appropriate to better manage waste and enhance recycling and recovery? If yes, this course is for you!

This course provides you with an overview of the municipal solid waste management situation in low- and middle-income countries. It covers key elements of the waste management system, such as its technical, environmental, social, financial and institutional aspects. Besides understanding the challenges, you will be introduced to appropriate and already applied solutions through selected case studies.

Deliziane Maltus and Charline Charley, Bachelor of Environmental Sciences and Diploma of Water Quality, from University of South Pacific, have completed the course and are available tutors of all students in Vanuatu. As a pre-requisite it is recommended that students have completed year 10 and have a good communication skills in English or French.

A new course is planned to be run at Ocean View where 4 students from Nugna Island will be participating and their certificate offered when course completed. Other students can apply by sending a message in the Facebook Page of Vanuatu Clean

The Children of Ekoftau, The Voice of Erakor Lagoons, will playing the Play Bibingo in Nugna Island. This was agreed between the Chiefs of Ekoftau from Erakor and Paramount Chief of Unakapo village
